Severe Weather Risk Returns to Alabama: Tornadoes, Damaging Winds, & Hail
From a weather perspective, we have packed a lot into the past week, from strong to severe storms, a temperature drop, and now, after a cold start, our area will warm back up with sunny skies. But the pattern comes back around, with another threat of severe weather and a drop in temperatures.
The Townsquare Media Weather Center is monitoring the potential for severe weather on Sunday, March 15. This weather system is part of a larger severe weather threat that will develop to our west and is predicted to impact several states.
Timing
The current thought for timing is from Sunday evening through the overnight hours into Monday morning.
Risk Areas
The Storm Prediction Center has portions of Alabama under a Marginal and Slight risk area.
West Alabama Risk Zones
Bibb: Marginal Risk
Fayette: Slight Risk
Greene: Marginal Risk
Hale: Marginal Risk
Lamar: Slight Risk
Perry: Marginal Risk
Pickens: The county is divided between both risk levels
Sumter: Marginal Risk
Tuscaloosa: Most of the county is under a Marginal Risk, while the northwest portion is under a Slight Risk.
Walker: Slight Risk

Possible Threats
- Tornadoes
- Damaging Winds up to 60 mph
- Large Hail up to a Quarter Size
- Heavy Rainfall
James Spann, Alabama Weather Network and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, said, “This will be a system with very good dynamics, but marginal thermodynamics with limited instability. The main threat from the line of storms will come from strong winds, but a brief, isolated tornado can't be ruled out, mainly over the northern third of the state.”
More to come on this developing weather situation.
