As of June 6, a city-wide mask mandate is in place for the city of Tuscaloosa, requiring masks in all public spaces. The full ordinance can be found here.

This decision was not made without taking into account a contingency plan for those without access to masks. In an attempt to promote awareness, health and safety, the city is hosting a series of a mask giveaways this week.

Residents partook the first round at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater yesterday June 8 from 7 to 10 a.m. Nearly 2,500 masks were given out to just over 500 vehicles, in a drive-through style parade.

"We thought if we were going to put it in place, we thought it was a great opportunity to actually give masks and educate the public on when to wear masks if they didn’t have enough time to get a mask or make a mask, to give them one," said city of Tuscaloosa Communications Director Richard Rush (to the Tuscaloosa News).

However, for those who were unable to make it to the first round of giveaways, there's still a chance to get a free mask. Tonight, from 4 to 7 p.m., more masks will be given out at the Alberta School of Performing Arts.

With the new scheduled time frame, officials are hoping to provide masks to many new people that wouldn't have been able to come earlier.
