An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale was recorded in North Carolina early Sunday morning, and reports indicate the quake was felt as far as East Alabama.

The earthquake was recorded just after 7 a.m. (EST) 4 kilometres southeast of Sparta, North Carolina. Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa and ABC 33/40 Chief Meteorologist James Spann said reports of the quake were felt as far as Chambers County in Alabama.

The 5.1 earthquake was the strongest quake recorded in North Carolina in more than 100 years. Damage from the earthquake has been reported throughout the Sparta area.
