Alabama Governor Kay Ivey mandated a mandatory, statewide stay-at-home order Friday afternoon during a press conference from the state Capitol in Montgomery.

"My fellow Alabamians, I want to get straight to the point," Ivey said. "Effective tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m., I am mandating a stay-at-home order for the entire state."

Ivey said she has hesitated to take this action so as not to strangle the life out of the state's economy, but as more cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus are confirmed across Alabama every day and projections show hospitals will could be overwhelmed in the next two or three weeks, Ivey said she could wait no longer.

"Today I am confirmed that our previous efforts to limit social interactions and reduce the chances of spreading this virus have not been enough and that's why we're taking this more drastic step," Ivey said.

"I can't say this any more clearly," Ivey said. "COVID-19 is an imminent threat to our way of life and we are past urging people to stay at home. It is now the law."
