Stillman College has announced Earvin “Magic” Johnson, a global leader, philanthropist, and NBA icon, will deliver the keynote address at its Sesquicentennial Commencement Ceremony, to be held on Saturday, May 9, at 9 a.m.

The 2026 Commencement arrives as a landmark chapter in Stillman College’s story, unfolding amid its Sesquicentennial celebration, honoring 150 years of academic distinction, perseverance, and lasting influence.

“Founded in 1876, Stillman College has remained committed to educating and empowering students to lead and serve in communities across the nation and beyond,” said the press release.

From his iconic run on the hardwood to his remarkable achievements in business, Earvin “Magic” Johnson has built a legacy that extends far beyond sports and has emerged as a powerful advocate for education and community empowerment.

Across the nation, Johnson has earned widespread recognition for his impact on education and society, receiving honorary degrees from Michigan State University, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Rust College.

Guided by a deep commitment to uplifting others, the Magic Johnson Foundation has opened doors for countless students by funding scholarships, expanding access to technology, and investing in community-driven efforts that create brighter educational pathways in underserved communities nationwide.

According to the press release, “This appearance will also mark Mr. Johnson’s first address in the state of Alabama, adding further distinction to an already historic occasion for the College.”

Sesquicentennial Commencement

The 2026 commencement will be held at Sheppard Lawn, the historic heart of campus. It symbolizes the significance of this milestone year.

Bringing together graduates, families, alumni, and supporters to honor the Class of 2026's accomplishments and celebrate the Stillman College legacy that continues to shape generations.

“Hosting commencement on Sheppard Lawn during our 150th Anniversary is both symbolic and deeply meaningful for Stillman College,” said Dr. Yolanda W. Page, President of Stillman College. “This milestone reflects the strength of our legacy and the promise of our future. We are honored to welcome Mr. Johnson to share in this historic occasion.”
