Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated is a national collegiate sorority that was incorporated in 1922. A local chapter was charted in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on November 8, 1980. TaNeezia Cook leads as President of the Epsilon Mu Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated.
The commitment to service is expressed in the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. slogan “Greater Service, Greater Progress.” The women of Sigma Gamma Rho support their efforts across the United States and abroad with over 500 chapters, including the U.S. Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Germany, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates.
TaNeezia Cook joined the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. with the Zeta Chi Chapter chapter at the University of Alabama in 2002. She chose the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. because of the individuals in the chapter at the University of Alabama. She said, “They were just down to earth and a fun group of individuals.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc continues to show dedication to service and improving overall society. They thrive on excellence. She expressed that the sorority founders were educators, and she loves the efforts they “put towards improving education and the quality of education for our youth.”
When it comes to other Divine 9 sororities, Cook notes that she loves all of the D9 Sororities because they all “serve the same purpose.” So in her opinion, no matter the organization you decided to join, the women are all sorors.
In advancing sisterhood, scholarship, and service, the Epsilon Mu Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, guides local college women as well. They advise the Zeta Chi Chapter at The University of Alabama, Eta Kappa Chapter - Stillman College, and the Tau Kappa Chapter - The University of West Alabama.
Cook believes it is important to connect with college sorority sisters because they “can provide guidance to help them navigate in this world” that is called life. She further explains that “we can be the resource that they need to help further their career choices, and we can serve as a mentor. In addition, alumnae chapters have a mixed variety of women who have been through situations or have career paths that might resonate with our undergraduate sisters.”
Keeping the sorority’s mantra of “Greater Service, Greater Progress” at the forefront, the alumnae chapter is active with the community. They currently have a national affiliate club for young ladies ages 12-18 called the Rhoers Club. Also, they host a club for young girls ages 8-11 called The Rhosebuds.
Serving as President of the Epsilon Mu Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated for four years, Cook notes that it has been rewarding. She said that it has made her learn more about herself and her leadership abilities. She also learned that just because she was President didn’t mean she had to lead everything. Cook mentioned that “everyone in my chapter are leaders and find myself encouraging others to display their talents. However, I can't do this alone, and I need my team to help our alumnae chapter thrive and grow.”
