Judge Denies Meek Mill’s Request for Release on Bail and Won’t Recuse Herself
It looks like Meek Mill will stay in jail for a few more weeks. On Monday (April 2), Judge Grenece Brinkley, who has been under fire for alleged misconduct, denied the Philadelphia rapper’s request for release on bail.
In addition, Judge Brinkley ruled that her court “committed no error” in sentencing Mill and therefore will not recuse herself from the case.
“After reviewing all applicable case law, statutes, and testimony, this Court committed no error," Brinkley wrote in a statement (via Newsweek). "This Court did not commit any error with respect to Defendant’s motions for recusal. Defendant received proper notice of all alleged probation violations in advance of his hearing. Additionally, the evidence at the hearing was sufficient for this Court to find Defendant in technical violation of his probation."
"This sentence imposed was not manifestly excessive and this Court stated sufficient reasons on the record to support a state sentence of 2 to 4 years," she concluded.
As you may known, Mill was sentenced to two to four years in jail for violating his probation on a decade-old case on gun charges. The case has become an urgent issue for criminal justice reform, drawing support from music artists and civil rights activists.
Meek's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, told TMZ, "[The] ruling from Judge Genece Brinkley simply reaffirms the fact she has turned Meek Mill's case into a personal vendetta."
Mill’s legal team plans to make an appeal to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to secure the rapper's release.
Last month, Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf threw his support behind Meek Mill after Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said he wouldn’t block the rapper’s release on bail.
Meek Mill's post-conviction hearing is scheduled for April 16.
