New Alabama Area Code Goes Into Effect This Month

I warned you guys a couple of months ago that we'll be getting yet another area code here in West Alabama..

Well, the time has come to put the new area code "659" into effect.You can start using the new area starting April 13. Callers will need to include the area code of the person they are dialing in addition to the seven-digit telephone number. Calls made during the transition period will still complete, without the area code but the transition period will end Oct. 12 and callers must use the new area code.

Which areas will be affected?

The 205 area code generally covers the western central portion of the state, including  Birmingham, Clanton, Hamilton, Jasper, Pell City and Tuscaloosa. That same area will also be served by 659.
